NYCLA notes with sadness the death of Hon. John Keenan, who served with distinction on the Southern District of New York for more than 40 years. Judge Keenan was the chief of the homicide unit in the Manhattan DA’s office, and he rose to be the Chief Assistant in that office, showing the value of his wisdom and counsel which continued on the bench. He was appointed to the Southern District by President Reagan in 1983, and he continued in service until very recently, having taken senior status in 1996. He was beloved by all, especially his colleagues on the bench. He was collegial, had a great sense of humor and epitomized the word “gentleman” in the very best sense of that word. His trial skills, both as a lawyer and as a judge, were renowned. A product of Regis High School, Manhattan College, and Fordham Law School, he also exemplified the opportunities and career paths that these institutions have provided to so many over the years. We will miss him, and we send condolences to his family.
