NYCLA Tort Law Committee Statement in Support of the Grieving Families Act

The Grieving Families Act (Senate Bill S8485B, Assembly Bill A9232) was passed earlier this year with overwhelming bipartisan support and was delivered to the Governor on December 12, 2024.  Prior versions of the bill were passed by the Legislature in 2022 and 2023, also with broad bipartisan majorities, but were vetoed by the Governor.

NYCLA’s officers note with disappointment that on December 13, Governor Hochul vetoed the so-called "Death Gamble" bill, which was designed to provide the families of judges who die in office with the same level of benefits that they would have received if the judge had retired and then died.

District Court Strikes Implementation of Keeping Families Together Policy

A federal judge in Texas struck down the Biden Administration's policy called Implementation of Keeping Families Together, which essentially told immigration enforcement authorities not to deport undocumented immigrants who are married to American citizens so long as they don't have criminal records.
