NYCLA congratulates Hon. Dianne Renwick on her appointment by Governor Hochul to serve as the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department. She has been serving as the Acting Presiding Justice since March, when her predecessor Hon. Rolando Acosta retired.Justice Renwick has had an outstanding career in public service. She served as a public defender for the Legal Aid Society and with the Federal Defenders. She has been on the bench since 1997, and was elected to the Supreme Court in 2001 and elevated to the Appellate Division by Governor David Paterson in 2008. She was the first Black woman to be appointed to the First Department, and is now the first Black woman to become the Presiding Justice of that Court.Justice Renwick is a graduate of Cornell University and Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School. We are pleased to recognize her well-deserved appointment.
