James B. Kobak, Jr., Past NYCLA President,
Presents Kobak Award to ADR Committee

2024 Annual Meeting
NYCLA Home of Law
111 Broadway
New York, New York

May 23, 2024

I am thrilled to present the awardee of this year’s Kobak Prize, which is selected by the President-Elect, and awarded to a NYCLA Regular or Special Committee, Section, or Task Force which has developed programs or projects which have been innovative, of high quality, and have had, or are likely to have, an impact on the betterment of the law, our judicial system, or the Association itself.  This award consists of a $500 prize to enhance the Committees’ work.

This year’s recipient of the Kobak Prize is NYCLA’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, for its event: “Meet the ADR Coordinators Networking Event and Program”, held on March 7, 2024. The ADR Committee sponsored a networking event followed by a program with the ADR Coordinators from across the NY/Metropolitan area. The Committee and NYCLA’s CLE Institute hosted a round table discussion with 10 coordinators from the Office of the Deputy Chief Administrative Judge, NY County Supreme Court, Civil Branch, NYC Civil Court, Kings County Supreme Court Civil term, Queens County Supreme Court, Civil term, Richmond County, Staten Island Supreme Court, Bronx Supreme Court, Civil Term, Bronx Supreme Court, Matrimonial Division, 9th Judicial District and NYC Family Court.

The coordinators discussed their roles, expectations from arbitrators and mediators as well as attorneys submitting cases for mediation/arbitration. They also answered numerous questions from a live audience of 32 people and there were many interactions among the coordinators – many of whom had met each other live and in person for the first time – so they could compare approaches to various situations and discuss ideas.

We congratulate NYCLA’s ADR Committee for its high quality programming, in furtherance of NYCLA’s mission to elevate the standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession and fostering the spirit of collegiality among members of the Association and throughout the bar, as well as promoting high-quality legal education and other resources for law students and lawyers. Thank you.
