BAR ASSOCIATIONS UNITE IN FOOD DRIVE TO HELP VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA

September 7, 2005 – NEW YORK, NY – The New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) and several of its Affiliate Bar Association members – the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY); Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Law Association of New York (LeGaL); and Metropolitan Black Bar Association – are working with City Harvest, New York’s only food rescue program, to collect food to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The most needed items are canned meals – such as hearty soups, stews, chili and pasta – and peanut butter (in plastic containers). NYCLA is accepting donations at its Home of Law, 14 Vesey Street (between Broadway and Church Street), which is open from 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM on Saturday. For the first shipment, items will be collected at NYCLA until Thursday, September 15. For more information about the food drive, please contact Lois Davis, NYCLA’s Pro Bono Director, at 212-267-6646, ext. 217, or email her at ldavis@nycla.org.

“In so many ways, the legal profession throughout America is responding to the Katrina catastrophe with unbounded generosity,” said Norman L. Reimer, NYCLA President. “In the coming weeks, NYCLA will offer to assist lawyers and law students as they seek to recover. In the meantime, the most urgent need for the hundreds of thousands of victims is food. NYCLA is delighted to partner with the Asian American Bar Association of New York; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Law Association of New York; and Metropolitan Black Bar Association in trying to meet this urgent need. I urge all NYCLA members and the entire profession to join with us in this crucial endeavor.”

City Harvest is a member of America’s Second Harvest, which is coordinating the food drive nationwide. One hundred percent of donations will be used directly to support America’s Second Harvest’s Hurricane Katrina relief activities.

City Harvest, a nonprofit organization founded in 1981, is the world’s oldest food rescue program. This year, City Harvest will rescue over 19 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry – including restaurants, manufacturers, wholesalers, greenmarkets, hotels, corporate cafeterias, grocery stores and farms – and deliver it to more than 800 community food programs throughout the five boroughs.
