NYCLA Supreme Court Task Force Issues Second Report to Biden’s Commission on SCOTUS Calling for Even More Comprehensive Reforms

Sept. 9, 2024 New York, New York – New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) Supreme Court Task Force issued a second report for consideration by the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States. In 2021, the NYCLA Task Force on the Supreme Court issued their first report on Suggestions on the Issue of Term Limits and Court Expansion to the Commission for consideration.

Today, the Task Force issued a second report, commending the alignment between NYCLA and President Biden’s proposals in term limits, a binding code of ethics, and legislative pathways and enforcement mechanisms. The new report highlights additional elements which they urge should be considered.

Elliot Shields, member of the NYCLA Task Force on the Supreme Court and primary author of the report said “We have identified 3 key areas which would enhance broader reform efforts including the gradual implementation of reforms, expanded roles for senior Justices, and confirmation process reforms. We believe these additional elements are essential and are reflective of both legislative and constitutional approaches to fortify and legitimatize the proposed changes.
