LOWER MANHATTAN BAR ASSOCIATION WELCOMES RANDY COHEN, “THE ETHICIST,” FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE
OCTOBER 2, 2009 – NEW YORK, NY – Randy Cohen, writer of The New York Times Magazine’s “Ethicist” column, will speak about the ethical responsibilities of attorneys and their role in society at the New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA), a lower Manhattan bar association located at 14 Vesey Street, on Wednesday, October 14, at 6:00 PM. The program, titled Shysters, Sharks and Saviors: ARE LEGAL ETHICS IMMORAL?, will feature a conversation between Mr. Cohen and renowned Fordham Law School Ethics Professor Bruce A. Green, which will be moderated by Lewis F. Tesser, director of NYCLA’s Ethics Institute. A reception will follow the presentation.
The provocative discussion will attempt to answer such questions as:
Why do attorneys protect the secrets of liars?
Why do attorneys ask the court to let wrongdoers escape punishment?
Why do attorneys encourage individuals who have done nothing wrong to settle?
Why do attorneys assist individuals in committing heinous acts (e.g., establishing sweatshops in third world countries)?
Why do attorneys force police off the street to testify about a $25 ticket?
The program is available as a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course; two Ethics credits will be granted; the cost is $75 for NYCLA members, $125 for nonmembers and $25 for attendees who are not attorneys.
