NYCLA to Host Annual Public Service Awards Reception

on September 25

 

SEPTEMBER 16, 2008 – NEW YORK, NY – The New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) will hold its annual Public Service Awards Reception on Thursday, September 25 beginning at 6:00 PM at the NYCLA Home of Law, 14 Vesey Street. Hon. Kristin Booth Glen, Surrogate’s Court, New York County, will be the special guest speaker. Hon. William J. Davis, Chair of NYCLA’s Public Service Awards Committee, and Ann B. Lesk, NYCLA’s President, will present awards to seven public sector attorneys in recognition of their dedication and commitment. NYCLA will also present the 2008 Criminal Justice Public Service Fellowships, based on an essay competition, to two attorneys who practice criminal law in the public sector.

 

Public Service Awardees

The public sector attorneys who will be honored are: Ramonita Cordero, Supervising Attorney, MFY Legal Services, Inc.; Edward Josephson, Director of Litigation of the South Brooklyn Legal Services and Housing Litigation Support, Legal Services NYC; Susan Kath, Chief of the Environmental Law Division, New York City Law Department; Frank LeNaour, Court Clerk Specialist of the Appellate Term, First Department, New York State Supreme Court; Antonia Merzon, Assistant District Attorney, New York County District Attorney’s Office; Sarah S. Normand, Assistant United States Attorney, Southern District of New York; and Kenneth R. Stephens, Staff Attorney, Civil Law Reform Unit, The Legal Aid Society.

 

Criminal Justice Public Service Fellowship Awardees

The Criminal Justice Public Service Fellowships are awarded based on an essay competition open to attorneys practicing up to seven years within the public sector in the field of criminal justice. This year’s essay question was: “The Sealing of Criminal Convictions: Should the System Ever Forgive and Forget?” The 2008 winners are Eric Rosen, Assistant District Attorney, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, and Monyca White, Staff Attorney, The Legal Aid Society of New York. Winners receive a cash stipend of $2,000.

 

The Public Service Awards Reception is among the myriad events sponsored by NYCLA throughout its Centennial year. NYCLA (www.nycla.org) was founded in 1908 as the first major bar association in the country that admitted members without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual identity. Since its inception, it has pioneered some of the most far-reaching and tangible reforms in American jurisprudence and has continuously played an active role in legal developments and public policy.
