NYCLA HOSTS PUBLIC FORUM – PRIVATE MILITARY CONTRACTING:

NEW SOLDIERS IN NEW WARS ON JUNE 26

 

JUNE 24, 2008 – NEW YORK, NY-The New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) is hosting a free public forum, Private Military Contracting: New Soldiers in New Wars, on Thursday, June 26 beginning at 6:00 PM at the NYCLA Home of Law, 14 Vesey Street.

 

There will be a discussion about the security contractors in Iraq, who constitute the second largest force in the country after the American military, led by Professor Kateri Carmola, C.S. Johnson Fellow in Political Philosophy, Middlebury College and author of the soon-to-be-published book, Private Security Contractors in the Age of New Wars: Risk, Law & Ethics. The security contractors come from countries all over the world and work for established, publicly traded companies, as well as small start-up firms and tend to earn much more than their military counterparts. Despite their prominence, their activities go underreported and the regulations guiding their conduct are unclear.

 

NYCLA’s Foreign and International Law, Professional Ethics, Law & Literature, Library and Art Committees are sponsors of the forum.

 

The forum is among the myriad events sponsored by NYCLA throughout its Centennial year. NYCLA (www.nycla.org) was founded in 1908 as the first major bar association in the country that admitted members without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual identity. Since its inception, it has pioneered some of the most far-reaching and tangible reforms in American jurisprudence and has continuously played an active role in legal developments and public policy.
