NYCLA’s 93rd Annual Dinner Celebrates the

160th Anniversary of the New York Court of Appeals

 

DECEMBER 5, 2007 – NEW YORK, NY – The New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) is hosting its 93rd Annual Bar Dinner on Tuesday, December 11 at 6:30 PM at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Approximately 1,400 lawyers and judges are expected to attend. This year, NYCLA will celebrate the 160th Anniversary of the New York Court of Appeals. Hon. Richard C. Wesley, United States Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit and former member of the New York Court of Appeals, will make a presentation to the Court of Appeals. Hon. Judith S. Kaye, Chief Judge of the State of New York, will respond on behalf of the Court. Hon. Charles L. Brieant, former Chief Judge of the Southern District of New York, will present the William Nelson Cromwell Award to Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin, United States District Judge, Southern District of New York. The Boris Kostelanetz President’s Medal will be presented to Hon. Harold Baer Jr., United States District Judge, Southern District of New York.

 

Judge Scheindlin: William Nelson Cromwell Award Recipient

The William Nelson Cromwell Award is given each year to recognize a member of the New York bar for “unselfish service to the profession and the community.” Judge Scheindlin worked as a prosecutor and commercial litigator prior to becoming a judge. Judge Scheindlin, who served on NYCLA’s Board of Directors and as a chair of the Tort Law Section, is currently a member of the NYCLA Task Force on Judicial Independence and the Judicial Section. In addition, she is a former Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Commercial and Federal Litigation Section and member of its House of Delegates. She is a frequent lecturer and has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School since 1983.

 

Judge Baer: Boris Kostelanetz President’s Medal Recipient

The Boris Kostelanetz President’s Medal is conferred upon a member whose record of dedication and service to the Association and legal profession comport with the highest standards. Judge Baer served as a New York State Supreme Court Justice from 1982 to 1992. In addition to hundreds of published opinions, he has written extensively on legal topics. Judge Baer is a former president of NYCLA (1979-1981) and co-founder, with his wife, Dr. Suzanne Baer, of the Association’s Summer Minority Judicial Internship Program, which has provided law students of color with paid internships with state and federal judges since 1989.

The Annual Dinner is among the myriad NYCLA events taking place during the Association’s Centennial year celebration, which commenced in April 2007 and ends in December 2008. NYCLA (www.nycla.org) was founded in April 1908 as the first major bar association in the country that admitted members without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, gender or sexual identity. Since its inception, it has pioneered some of the most far-reaching and tangible reforms in American jurisprudence and has continuously played an active role in legal developments and public policy.
