New York County Lawyers Association Criminal Justice Section Issues Statement
on the Anniversary of the January 6th Attack on the Capital
One year has passed since January 6, 2021, a day in which the rule of law in this nation was greatly tested. On that date, the United States Congress came under physical assault by persons who wished to overturn the result of a democratic process. They were encouraged by a propaganda campaign asserting that the election had been “rigged,” an assertion universally rejected by courts and local election administrators.
The incursion on the rule of law that took place last January 6 could recur. Such a threat would not only imperil our Republic but would further undermine our ability to champion democratic values around that world.
To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin, our constitutional republic can endure only so long as the People of this country can keep it, by remaining committed to democracy, transparency, and the rule of law. Ensuring that the nation remains governed by law, rather than by passion, artifice, or propaganda, is one of NYCLA’s core missions. We must remember the lesson of January 6: for democracy to endure, the rule of law must prevail.
