New York County Lawyers Association Statement on the Passing of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Stephen C. Lessard, President of the New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) issued this statement today on behalf of the Association:
“We join the Nation as it mourns the passing and celebrates the historic contributions of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The New York County Lawyers Association expresses our most sincere condolences to the family of Justice Ginsburg on her passing. As only the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg came to the Court after fighting for gender equality under the law during her first 20 years as a member of the Bar. She was a fierce litigator and legal strategist, and she served as the lead architect in breaking down barriers faced by women and men in the fight for gender equality under the law.
In her signature ‘pathmarking’ legal advances as a litigator, Justice Ginsburg successfully argued cases that expanded protections under the 14thAmendment and civil rights laws to recognize and guarantee equal protection of the laws without regard to gender. As a jurist, she crafted undeniably persuasive opinions that led to transformative moments in American legal history, evidencing her determination to eliminate gender discrimination and bias one decision as a time.
As members of the Bench and Bar, we aspire to assume the mantle of Justice Ginsburg and uphold the responsibility to fight against all forms of discrimination in American life. Justice Ginsburg serves as an iconic example of the strength of human character. She provided an enduring blueprint in word and deed, always exhibiting grace, civility, commitment, and courage while seeking to bring about just change. She will be greatly missed.”
The New York County Lawyers Association had the distinct honor of hosting Justice Ginsburg on December 17, 2014, at the New York County Lawyers Association 100th Annual Dinner Honoring the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on its 225th Anniversary.
