New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) commends the actions of the United States Supreme Court today guaranteeing due process and equal protections respecting gay marriage in all 50 states. NYCLA has a long history of supporting marriage equality dating back to 2003. Equality under the law and inclusion for all have been long standing policies for NYCLA, and NYCLA was among the first bar associations in New York State to stand for marriage equality beginning with a December 8, 2003 Board Resolution calling for Equal Civil Marriage Rights for All New York Couples. NYCLA has been and continues to be fully committed to equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender couples and their families and has supported this position with educational programming, board resolutions and amicus briefs:

Carol A. Sigmond, President of NYCLA observed: “This historic decision will make it possible for all Americans to pursue marriage with whomever they choose.” NYCLA stands behind this decision and with Justice Anthony Kennedy and his statement “The hope of gay people intending to marry is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”
