NYCLA Hosts Public Forum: Collateral Consequences of Convictions – Post-Conviction Relief From Disabilities and Deportation Warnings on November 10
October 29, 2010 – New York, NY – The New York County Lawyers’ Association’s (NYCLA) Judicial Section is sponsoring a free public forum, “Collateral Consequences of Convictions: Post-Conviction Relief From Disabilities and Deportation Warnings,” on November 10 at 6:00 PM at the NYCLA Home of Law, 14 Vesey Street. Forum panelists will discuss recent changes – from the Supreme Court’s landmark decision, Padillo v. Kentucky, which found that criminal defendants must be accurately advised of the probable/possible deportation consequences of guilty pleas, to new procedures enacted by the New York State Legislature for those who wish to obtain a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities.
Forum panelists are: Hon. James Yates, New York State Supreme Court; Hon. Harold Baer Jr., U.S. District Judge, Southern District of New York; McGregor Smyth, managing attorney, Civil Action Practice, The Bronx Defenders Office; and Seth Steed, staff attorney, Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem. The forum will be moderated by Keith Schmidt, court attorney, New York City Criminal Courts.
NYCLA’s Criminal Justice Section and Justice Center are co-sponsors of the forum.
