Course Description:

Join us for a very practical program discussing how social media and marketing are affecting lawyers in 2013. Topics to be discussed include:

  •  Marketing Focus at Law Firms: The impact and Responsibilities
  •  Social Media and On-line Marketing - Effects on Professional Conduct in NYS: A discussion of the attorney advertising rules, including examples of how the standards apply and how different marketing techniques are likely to be interpreted under the rules.
  • Social Media Trends—Recent Case Law and Implications for Legal Practice: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the myriad of other social media pose important questions for lawyers, both in litigation and in transactional practice.  What are the implications of recent federal and state court decisions related to social media in the areas of intellectual property, defamation, privacy, and advertisement law?  What are the effects of some of the seminal cases on common company practices and policies in social media?  These are just some of the key issues to be addressed.
  • Social Media Trends – Use for Business Development:* Focus will be on  LinkedIn, the social media outlet most likely to be used by the widest range of lawyers.  Topics include an overview of LinkedIn and examples of how lawyers have used it to become more visible, thereby attracting prospective clients. The presenters will show how to use the tool to reconnect with prior clients/contacts and establish new relationships.

Bruce K. Segall is President of Marketing Sense for Business LLC, providing outsourced business development & marketing services to professional services firms, focusing on the law.  He trains lawyers and others regularly on using LinkedIn.  Previously, he had 25 years' marketing experience in large companies & smaller firms.  Bruce has a B.A. in American Studies from Yale and an MBA from Stanford.

Ron Idra is founder of Promotion for Professionals,, a complete, one-stop shop for attorneys, law firms, and other professionals and businesses seeking a cost-effective way to leverage the internet and a consistent brand to broaden their marketing reach.  A former practicing IP attorney, Ron has nearly 10 years' experience in law firms and contracting to corporations before entering the marketing field.  He is the author of "The Complete Licensing Kit," a book for the layperson on the basics of intellectual property and drafting licenses (Sourcebooks, 2007).  Ron has a B.A. from Brooklyn College and a J.D. from the New York University School of Law.
