The following Mission Statement* was adopted by the Board on November 11,
2003:
The Association is organized and shall be operated as a bar
association exclusively for charitable and educational purposes with the primary
object of promoting the public interest by:
- Advancing the science of jurisprudence;
- Promoting the administration
of justice and reforms in the law in the public interest;
- Elevating the
standards of integrity, honor and courtesy in the legal profession and fostering
the spirit of collegiality among members of the Association and throughout the
bar;
- Applying its knowledge and experience in the field of law to the
promotion of the public good;
- Arranging for the provision by its members
of free legal services for indigent, low income and other persons in need;
- Ensuring access to justice for all;
- Advocating for a strong and
independent judiciary;
- Encouraging diversity throughout the legal
profession;
- Maintaining high ethical standards for the bench and bar;
- Promoting high-quality legal education and other resources for law
students and lawyers; and such other charitable and educational activities
appropriate to a bar association as will primarily promote the public
interest.
* NYCLA’s mission was originally defined in the Certificate of
Incorporation filed by the Association with the New York State Department of
State on April 21, 1908. It was subsequently amended in the Certificate of
Amendment of the Certificate of Incorporation Under Section 803 of the
Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, filed on January 21, 1972.
